Private patient information

Fees and insurance

Mr Dowen welcomes both self-paying and privately insured patients. Consultation fees are set out clearly below, while the cost of investigations or treatment is confirmed separately where required.

Private care

Understanding the cost of your care

Private treatment can be funded directly by you or through private medical insurance, depending on your circumstances and policy.

The consultation fee covers your appointment with Mr Dowen. If further investigations such as X-rays, scans or blood tests are needed, these are normally charged separately by the hospital or imaging provider.

If surgery is recommended, a quotation can be provided once the exact procedure and hospital requirements are known. Surgical costs are therefore not listed as a single fixed figure on this website.

Privately insured patients should check their individual policy before treatment, as benefit limits, excesses, referral requirements and authorisation arrangements vary between insurers and policies.

Please check costs and authorisation before treatment.

The secretary and hospital team can help clarify the administrative process, but your insurer remains the best source of information about what your individual policy will cover.

Consultation fees

Private appointment costs

These are Mr Dowen's currently published self-pay consultation fees at Spire Washington Hospital.

Initial consultation £200

Your first appointment

Your initial consultation includes assessment of your symptoms and relevant history, clinical examination and discussion of the next steps in investigation or treatment.

Follow-up consultation £100

Review and follow-up

Follow-up appointments may be used to review investigation results, monitor progress, discuss treatment choices or review recovery where appropriate.

Additional tests and treatment are not included in the consultation fee.

Imaging, injections, hospital treatment, surgery and other services may carry separate charges. You will be advised about relevant costs before proceeding wherever possible.

Funding your treatment

Self-pay and private medical insurance

The route is slightly different depending on whether you are paying directly or using an insurance policy.

Self-paying patients

Paying for your own care

You can arrange a consultation without using private medical insurance. If investigations or treatment are recommended, the relevant costs can then be discussed before you decide whether to proceed.

  • No insurance authorisation is required
  • Consultation fees are shown above
  • Investigations may be charged separately
  • Surgery is quoted according to the procedure required
  • You remain in control of whether and when to proceed
Insured patients

Using private medical insurance

Mr Dowen sees patients with private medical insurance and is recognised by major UK insurers. Bupa currently lists him as Fee Assured and within its Open Referral network.

Recognition and benefit arrangements can differ between insurers and can change, so please confirm directly with your insurer that Mr Dowen and the proposed hospital or treatment are covered by your policy.

  • Contact your insurer before the appointment
  • Check whether a GP referral is required
  • Obtain an authorisation number where needed
  • Ask about your excess or outpatient benefit limit
  • Check again before scans, injections or surgery
If you are insured

A simple process before your appointment

01

Check your policy

Contact your insurer and explain that you would like to see Mr Daniel Dowen for a private orthopaedic consultation.

02

Confirm referral requirements

Ask whether your policy requires a GP or other referral before the consultation can be authorised.

03

Obtain authorisation

Where required, obtain the insurer's authorisation or claim number and keep this available for the practice and hospital.

04

Recheck before further treatment

If scans, injections or surgery are recommended, contact the insurer again to confirm that the next stage of treatment is authorised.

Surgery fees

Why surgical fees are not listed as a single price

The cost of surgery depends on the exact procedure, complexity of treatment, hospital arrangements and whether additional services or investigations are required.

For that reason, surgical fees are confirmed after assessment rather than presenting a generic price that may not accurately reflect your treatment.

A treatment quotation may include

  • Mr Dowen's surgical fee
  • Hospital charges
  • Anaesthetic fees where applicable
  • Implants or specialist equipment where relevant
  • Other services associated with the planned procedure
